This is a list of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction works as portrayed in literature, film, television, and, comics. Apocalyptic fiction is a subgenre of science fiction that is concerned with the end of civilization due to a potentially existential catastrophe such as nuclear warfare, pandemic, extraterrestrial attack, impact event, cybernetic revolt, technological singularity.

I'm stumped. Absolutely stumped. I've been able to come up with a few names that were a little too obvious like Junk City and Ruston. I've named a few towns based on local landmarks. I named a town Noose River because of the nearby Neuse River and I liked the dark name. I've also named a town Glof because it's built in a golf resort.

I've also named a few towns by taking letters off of road signs until I'm satisfied with a name. So far I've got Etestar which I made by taking letters off of a 'Next Rest Area' sign and Vecton which is a bunch of letters off of a sign that I found on google fucking maps which said 'Cove City Trenton'.

I really don't want to name every other town by scratching letters of of road signs but I'm pretty stumped looking for more criteria to name my towns.

Any suggestions on how I should name my towns? How do you name yours?

Edit: Figured I'd add onto this with some lore from my world to give more perspective.

The war was nearly three hundred years ago and in some places people don't even speak any language that exists today. There are a few major factions throughout the wastes with some of them being fairly tech savvy and some of them being backward savages.

North America has become a pretty shitty place to live, the bombs caused earthquakes and the earthquakes caused the Yellowstone volcano to erupt creating an area of North America known as the Ashlands.

The sea level and coast line are also significantly different as parts of the coast sunk into the sea and the ocean rose 9 meters carving out a new coastline. A lot of the east coast is miles and miles of salt marshes, areas where the sea water has flooded the land and created vast expanses of salt-water swamps.

My story takes place in North Carolina but eventually the main character finds himself heading west gradually in the search for a kidnapped loved one.

This is one of the best map themes I've seen in a while. Designer (and neurobiologist) Eleanor Lutz took inspiration from her 'favorite post-apocalyptic worlds' including those depicted in Battlestar Galactica, Starcraft and The Matrix to build this beautiful style in Mapbox. Lutz named the theme Space Station Earth and gave oceans and other bodies of water the look of a starry galaxy. Use the interactive fullscreen map to re-imagine your city as a colony, somewhere out in space.

'My favorite part about making this map was adding oversized markers for stores, parks, and other points of interest to simulate city lights,' Lutz wrote in a blog post for Mapbox where she is a consulting designer. 'I lowered the contrast for landmasses and buildings to highlight the lights and the galaxy ‘ocean.’'

Lutz added depth to her map with custom textures for buildings, roads and landmass-ocean boundaries using free textures from Lost and Taken to build pseudo-3-D edges and steel plates.
